Expensive (unless you've got it with scanner), works with only one scanner model - you have to buy it again when changing scanners etc. Pros: rich set of correction options (even more in Ai version), easy to use user interface, film profiles and lots of predefined correction settings for your scans.Ĭons: tend to create color casts when using auto correction, when batch scanning auto correction for all frames is based on contents of first frame - you need Ai version to do auto correction for each image separately which is really annoying.
Silverfast 6.6 batch scan negatives manual#
Pros: free, best colors out of the box (without manual corrections) with slightly too much reds, rich set of correction options.Ĭons: works with one scanner model only, batch scanning uses same filenames for every batch so you must manually rename each set or save it in different folder.

To make full use of ICC profiles and optionally use IT8 calibration you must have either SilverFast Ai or VueScan Professional. VueScan Standard costs 39.95 USD and for Professional you must pay 79.95 USD. Amount of correction options is simply impressive (you can work with each base color on three levels - shadows, midtones and highlights), but will cost us between 218 and 398 euros depending on scanner model. Most advanced SilverFast Ai allows you to adjust scan settings any way you want.

More advanced SE Plus with more corrections options costs 74 to 104 euros depending on scanner model. Other vendors do include SilverFast SE / SE Plus or even Ai with their scanners! Thats great because cheapest and least advanced version (SE) costs 49 euro.

Minolta DS Utility is winner when its about money - you get it for free with your Minolta scanner.

VueScan has most awful, non-intuitive inteface of all scanning software I've ever seen and gives smallest set of correction options.Ĥ. In both cases we can get excellent results with manual corrections ONLY.ģ. Personally I like SilverFast better mostly because of user interface. If we want best possible colors we should choose between Minolta DS Utility and SilverFast. As pointed above colors are closest ones to lab prints, but often there is just too much reds (can be easily corrected in any photo editing software).Ģ. If we want to quickly scan larger amount of frames, don't want to bother with manual correction (or just don't have time for it) and we are ready to forgive little color errors our best choice is Minolta DS Utility. green cast when lots of leafs, blue cast when lots of sky, yellow cast when most of photo is yellow wall etc.)ġ.

Both SilverFast and VueScan tends to create color cast from strongest color in given frame (ie. Minolta DS Utility was closest to lab prints when its about color reproduction. VueScan 9.0.52 Professional - owned by my friend who has been kind enough to let me try it out in full version.įirst impressions: each and every frame gives various results on all above programs.

SilverFast 6.6 SE Plus - I bought it after giving trial version a try.ģ. Minolta DS Utility - original software that came with my Scan Dual III.Ģ. Those are rather my thoughts and just tiny scan comparison.ġ. Don't expect some detailed test procedure. Hope you won't mind posting my results here. I've done small tests of scanning software some time ago.
